Someone is going to get 10 put past them before the end of this season.

ha ha yeah, I meant Boro are going to put 10 past someone before the end. I cant remember a better front 2/3 we have had (relative to the league we are in) in a long time. I really really hope we can keep all three together for the next year or two. I guess its all dependant on keeping the crowds high. If we keep going like this then there are going to be some all ticket league matches towards the end of the season.

He doesn’t mention any injury in his post-match interview on the SN website so hopefully superficial.

He was keen to point out that he’s scored 28 goals so far this season (he’s joint top in the league now with Kurt Willoughby of Clitheroe on 20 goals).

This is the table in question - actually me and tree were wrong, it’s “only" the top two in that table that “we" hold but all the same, impressive enough.

https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/step-4-promotion

Just as a point of explanation, that table uses the teams *currently* in the play-off places, so for example Alvechurch will probably end up in the top 2 anyway of their league, and not have to worry about them.

We’ve really got some momentum going now. Very good attendance today too. Things going great on and off the pitch.

I see Grimsby lost again today. That’s 5 defeats in last 6 and their fans are baying for Russell Slade’s blood (he got the dreaded vote of confidence from the board this week). If he gets the sack I hope it won’t affect Max Wright’s loan.

RIP Boro legend John Powell by Old Git

Posted: 11/1/2018 at 18:29:25, 137 views.

who died on Christmas Day, aged 81.
see full story on offical Site

Just add my own bit cos John was one of footballing heroes when I was a kid.
Along with the side that included Eddy Brown and Alan Franks.
Winning the North East League & Cup Double in 1962-63 my favourite all time Scarborough side,
scoring goals for fun and having a good F.A. cup run before losing to Crewe after a replay.
The rest of that side included Tommy McQaid, Billy Mordue, Terry Wood, Jim McCusker,
Derek Boyes, Owen Laffey, Cliff Jones, Barry Dunn and Peter Whyke. The season ended with a 5-1 thrashing of newly
crowned Midland League Champions Loughborough United in an end of season friendly.
Because of the horrendous winter weather that season Boro only played 31 matches but scored 100 goals
in the two leagues season, with much of the same team Boro joined the Midland League and scored 107 goals in 42 league games, with Johhny Powell getting his fair share.
That was the season that saw us beat Stamford 11-0, although their keeper got injured in the first half and there was no subs allowed then, and it was bloody cold cos I can remember clinging to the hot pipe that ran up the back of the old main stand to keep warm at half time. (The last match of the season was away at Stamford and it ended 2-2 when 11 played 11.)
A few weeks after beating Stamford, Boro thrashed Retford 8-0 with John Powell getting a hat-trick.
No doubt there’ll be a few more on here who remember Johnnny Powell as I seem to remember a couple of young mascots from those days who’ll be in their early twenties just about now.

As one of those young mascots I remember John well as he lodged with us for a while and we have kept in touch all through the years. He was a proper gentleman . His son has found a copy of his contract with Scarborough and he was on £10 a week which must have been a lot of money because he turned down full time terms at York City to stay part time with Scarborough as he was earning more by working and playing
Glad your good at Maths OG so I will be 28 in 2 weeks time

R.I.P John Powell.

His name is on this link a couple of times

It calls John Powell a ‘creative midfielder’.
I doubt many fans at the time saw him in midfield.
He was an inside forward, predominanlty inside left.
Like many inside forwards he played in a number of positions during in a game and would switch
positions with Alan Franks and whoever happened to be Centre Forward.
Some games he performed role of Outside Left or Left Wing. He had more bulk than Franksy
so was really useful against big defenders cos he still had a bit of pace and I remember him
scoring by running in towards goal from behind Brown & Franks through the gaps they created
and thrashing the ball across the keeper and into the net at the Edgehill Road end.
A number of JPs goals semed involve a good amount of wellie which is why he was a favourite.
Cliff Jones, at Inside Right, would drop back slightly to act as a link with the Boro half-back line
but that was just a reflection of the individual strengths in the side, its balance and how the side functioned
but he too was liable to end up first in the box to score. Although I do recall him spending a lot
of time hanging about between the halfway line and the oppostion goal emptying the contents of his nose
into the palm of his hand before wiping it onto his shorts.

Posted: 11/1/2018 at 20:16:38, 83 views. In reply to 'RE: RIP Boro legend John Powell'

that I kept from the early 60s, spending most games right up behind the goal
at the Edgehill Road/Seamer Road Ends and stats from that young Adamson’s book.
Sadly a lot of my newspaper cuttings have disintergrated so I’ve lost the coverage
of the Boro v South Shields game when Eddy Brown spent the whole game out on the left wing.
There was a photo on the back of the SEN of Eddy dashing down the left wing towards
the Edgehill Tea Hut looking as though he was hoping to cross the ball, jump over the fence
and grab a pork pie before Franksy or John Powell put the ball into the net.

Amazing that this was the season my Grandad took me to my first match, while I don’t remember a lot of players over the years I could give that team from memory, I’m Sure the 11-0 was when Derek Boyes was moved from wing half to centre forward to cover for an injury and scored 6 goals, Powell was certainly the old style inside forward and a class act.

Benny did ok for us when he was with us but would anybody prefer him back with the team that we now have? Who would you drop? For me he would be a good bench and squad member. No disrespect meant.

I don’t get the obsession we had with him. He chipped in with some important goals but I thought he was average.

I hope he’s not bought accommodation in Cheltenham, put it that way. He’d fit into a squad in our league but I don’t think he’s good enough for anything higher.

I wish him well but in my opinion very overrated.

Lovely guy, brilliant name with a great song, YouTube videos for Record Store Day, how could you not be obsessed with him?!

Oh you mean footballing ability? Fair point. He was average for 3/4 if the season, but was in form during the run in and fitted our formation perfectly - we’d have been much closer to Ossett in the semi if it was him rather than a half-match-fit Billy battling against Tyrone Gay.

If walshaw does get injured who do we have? Kitterick has mentioned having to manage wally carefully. I would love to see Benny back in the fold, he is raw but showed enough to be a great addition. Not to mention the buzz and cult status he has to add to the mix and dressing room.

Agree, thought he got better and better as the season went on. He held the ball up, brought other people into the game and was a real goal threat. I could see him being a real foil for our other attacking players. I think someone (Malton?) came up with a stat on his goal scoring performance in each half of the season which seemed to evidence that progression.

He scored 6 of our 18 goals in our 8-game winning streak. by Malton Seadog User: Malton Seadog

1 against Mossley in a 2-0 away win.
2 at home to Burscough in a 5-0 win.
2 away at Bamber in a 3-0 win.
1 at home in the epic Tadcaster 1-0 win.

BUT, from 20th September to 7th January, he started 21 competitive games and scored three times.

Maybe my first post on him was harsh, but we’ve moved on. Would I have him sat on the bench as backup? Maybe, but I still think Curtis is probably a better option if I had them both in front of me.

Is this the same Curtis that “most of" our fanbase seemed to want to slag off at Hyde and other venues (before he scored in fairness)

I’m fairly agnostic on the whole (not always keen on going back for players and want us to work with the players we’ve actually got ) but those stats don’t tell the whole story. Pre the ‘run’ Benny was often isolated up top on his own and I don’t think anybody thought this suited him but he battled manfully on, when he got support he started scoring and scoring 33% of the team’s goals is a more than decent return for most strikers. Between Curtis and Benny? Not sure, they’re both different but I would imagine with Coulson and Wrighty out wide he’d be a big threat in the air but Curtis might be better on the break with his pace.

Some good positive thoughts regarding Curtis, I think he gives us another option from the bench. You can often tell a strong team by how good the bench is, and I think we’re pretty damn good in that respect at the moment
