Turnbull not prepared to fight for his place? by Leeds seadog 27

Not being funny but cadman and binns have been prepared and continue to fight for a place in the side, why has turnbull not been prepared to do this? I think it’s a shame this situation has arose but we all want promotion and kittrick has been tasked with getting us it. I personally back him.

The fact that matty was relying on the extra cash from playing every week especially now he’s a new parent, this may have also played a part on his decision

That’s fair dos then cool bird. I’ve seen a lot of negative comments towards kittrick and to be fair to him he has been tasked with getting us out of this league and if he feels bringing experience in is the key to getting us promoted then I back him. I’m sure others would choose local players over promotion but I’m one of those fans whos not bothered where our players come from. For me, I just want the best team possible out there playing for us

I would like the best team, promotion and a squad of local players, yeah i know i can’t have them all but i think we have now and in the past over looked long term success for short term success, and yes this season is different to those we have had or will have for some time, but personally i think Matty was/is a good player just lacking in confidence, lets hope the board stay in touch with him and reassure him we are still a club were he can progress

It is what it is!!! Do any of us know exactly what has happened or what has been said between the gaffer and Matty??? It’s hard to get last years form back when you’re sat on the bench and he will no doubt admit he hasn’t been anywhere near last years form this yr. I would love for Matty to rediscover that form whilst at Pickering and then come home. We haven’t got a reserve side, yet we have to push for promotion whilst there’s an extra spot or two so this year is all about ‘trying’ to move up. And if that means losing players that are out of form for whatever reason and replacing with quality and experience then so be it. I just hope Matty left on good terms and is willing to come back and fight when he regains that form, which he will without doubt. Would love to see him at the back with the new fella but We’re not helping our own cause by bitching and complaining like Statler and Waldorf about our own chief because he let an out of form player go for an experienced leader.
Go get some game time and your confidence back, Matty.

On another note…..does anyone think we could do with a Big Bennie sized character in the middle to feed of Coulo and Max out wide?

Onwards and upwards!!!

If he has to go out to get games then so be it, isn’t half he player he was last season but that could be a number of reasons.. has fallen down the pecking order so now is the time to go out and show the club what it’s missing.. can’t keep everyone happy at this level.. players like the Cadman etc that’s been mentioned could easily play at a higher level and also has more to contend with when it comes to the midfield we currently have, he’s willing to knuckle down and fight for his place, coming from Bradford all the time can’t be easy either..

As for a strIker we we desperately need a new number 9 and a focal point in attack, someone who can hold it up and bring the other attackers into play. For me though he has to be worth bringing in and I’m sure the club is currently assessing its options in that department, has to be financially viable aswell

1st of all like to wish matty all the best, he was outstanding last season for sure real class, i have to say this season my opinion he has struggled, surface, lge crowds injuries, maybe a mix of all 3 but i think we all agree a big dip in his very high standards. What does the gaffer do keep trying him yes he did but it didn’t work, we all want promotion this season 2 automatic places, Matty on contract but out of form, needs a fix bring someone in and release someone off the pay roll we may not all agree and perhaps if not on contract ie not getting paid when not playing he could have stayed. The boss had to make a decision within a playing budget, we want promotion, he don’t deliver its his head, lets see end of season if Matty gets back to his best he can return surely.Roll on Sat.

Agree with the posts above, it’s a short term fix. Experienced guy in, young local lad with potential out.

Personally I’d have been trying to keep hold of Turnbull and letting him learn from the new player who has tons of experience and played at a lot higher level. Let him pick his brain, watch and learn from him.

He can’t do that from Pickering.

Might be a budget thing? But as the poster above said, comes to man management and its clear who SK was hammering in post match interviews now you see this. The other side is people wanting to play I guess, we won’t know whether SK has pushed him out or he’s wanted to go.

Knowing a source very close to matty and speaking to him I think it is definitely a case of been pushed out, having now become down the pecking order and no where near the starting 11 or squad what other option has the lad got but to leave.
He wants to play for this club I can tell you that for sure.

Matty would be a massive part of the club for years and years if looked after, but instead as above says, a short term view has scuppered that, he will be a big player with a big future, and that is our loss!

Can I play devil’s advocate here? by Malton Seadog User: Malton Seadog

Matty has not been the same player this year as last. He has recently had a baby with his partner, and his performances have been shaky at best at times.

And don’t forget, it was his decision to ask for game time at Pickering.

He was a massive player for us last season, but we’ve raised our game this season, and Matty has sadly gone in the opposite direction.

My hopes are that he goes to Pikes, has a good solid couple of months with them, and comes back all the stronger. I do get what you’re saying about giving him game time with the new centre half we’ve just signed, but at what cost? Conceding goals in key games?

This season is all about trying to get promoted, and if Steve thinks Matty isn’t at the level required to help us achieve that, then I’m afraid I have to back his decisions and trust his managerial prowess.

Time will tell. I just don’t think we should be too harsh on SK, as it’s clear Turnbull has been struggling.

Let’s be honest, the measure of the managers success this year is solely down to whether we gain the promotion or not. Failure is likely to cost him his job. On that basis he can’t afford to wait till matty regains form, and therefore has probably made the right decision, at least in his eyes.

However, what does that say about the club in general and any desire we have to try bring youngsters through the ranks? We gave Rudy some stick about ignoring those lads and this will hardly enthuse those lads down the ranks, that they’ll be given a chance when the time comes.

Very Disappointed!

Not sure where the issue is….. by Che…

Player comes in. Player leaves. Manager manages his squad. Squad quality improves. Improves within budget and within the boards satisfaction.

If he’s not performing to the standard required, and that bar has been raised from last season, then the manager has to act. His target is promotion. Unfortunately as lovely as it would be for Matty to rebuild form/confidence whatever he can’t do it in a Boro shirt; we don’t have a reserve set up that will allow that. Pickering Town is the next best thing. And I mean that with all due respect to the Pikes.

We retain his registration. Matty gets game time..earns some coin..and not travelling as much considering his young family.

Not sure where the issue is really.

Agree with Che.

While it’s all very nice encouraging youngsters to come through the ranks, as Che said, we cannot afford to blood new youngsters in the first team in the league. The NRSC and League Cup is a good place for that. A promotion-chasing campaign in the league is not.

We are a different club this season. We mean business, and with potentially four promotion spots up for grabs in our league, Kittrick has to do what he believes is necessary.

If we get through 60 players and go up, I don’t care. Promotion is the aim, and he has acted fast by bringing an experienced player in to solidify the defence. Ask me again in April whether SK has had a good season. For now, I trust him. We have 29 points from 13 games. By anyone’s standards that is good. On we go.

Don’t get me wrong, the aim has to be to get promoted. However, what does a move like this mean for other local players who are young and promising? You may as well leave Boro and play for Pickering as you won’t get a crack at the first team? Or if you do - it’s sink or swim from the very off? Chasing a short term gain continuously will hamper the club in the long run, everyone knows that in football, at any level.

My original point was, if SK genuinely thinks there is potential there, it comes down to man management. A word saying look you’re not up to it at the moment, but I think you can be. Stay with us, play in the cup games, play when there is no pressure (with a lead at the end of games), learn from the new experienced guy we’ve got in, come back a better more talented player. The caveat to all this is obviously budget, and whether Matty wanted to stay. This conversation may have been had and he’s said no thanks, I’m going to play games at Pickering, at which point it’s a different ball-game. Equally SK might think he’s not good enough full stop, with no room for improvement.

Is playing in a league below going to improve him as a player? Sure it may do his confidence some good, but is he going to be tested continuously to make him a better player?

Not many are privy to these things so it’s hard to judge, I just wonder if it could’ve been handled differently for the benefit of everyone, long and short term.

No wonder the lad has lost confidence Mr Kittrick . You played him against a very good South Sheilds when he wasn’t fit , then blamed him for the defeat against Hyde , took him all the way to Kendall and didn’t put him in the squad with no explanation and did the same to him against Ramsbottom . Mr Kittrick hang your head in shame your man management skills are nil . I am sure he will bounce back from his disappointment , it’s Boros loss and Pickering’s gain

You’ve bagged a top bloke there in Knowlesy. He also has a habit of coming up with goals from centre half.

When I saw the headline I was expecting Kittrick to have signed a centre forward.

Still, he sounds like a very good signing for us. Hopefully he can help plug the defensive leaks.

I got the impression he was also a central midfielder. This could be interesting as at the moment we are just about ok but still something missing. We deffo need a solid right back which I suspect he isn’t so if central defence who would you drop & where does that leave Matty who I would hate to lose - he just needs to get his mojo back. Central midfield, well, who would you ‘rest’? Always exciting though to welcome a new face & wait with anticipation to see if we have a genuine gud in. Welcome Jimmy.

Matty Turnbull was immense last year and will be again. He’s had a run of poor form and deserved to be dropped but he will also get another chance if he is loyal enough to our club. He was amazing next to a wise head like Dom Roma and maybe Knowles has a similar leadership style, I really hope he stays and helps us push for a promotion place.

That’s a great point. Roma made the difference for us at the end of last season. Let’s hope Knowles is in a similar mould.

They haven’t spent any of their six figure sum from the cup game yet, am fully expecting them and South Shields to not give anyone else a chance of the two promotion places, unfortunately :(

Getting smashed by mk dons might be counter-productive to their season. Confidence and all that. Ok they might bring a few in, but so can we and i wouldn’t swap coulo and max wright for anyone. A striker and a right back and i think we can get that second spot.

I rather think Hyde’s approach might catch up with them a bit. it is very much a case of trying to keep it tight and nick a goal. I’m not sure that will always work for them.

It was the same in that MK Dons game. They had nothing to lose but were too cautious in their approach to the game until they went 2-0 down and then they started to look dangerous when they had to have a real go at them to get back into the game.

http://www.evostikleague.co.uk/league-legends-poll-is-now-open-42024

Voting has now opened to choose the all-time greatest 100 players to appear in the Northern Premier League. A few old Boro players have reached the nominations stage, namely, Jeff Barmby, Tony Aveyard, Harry Dunn, Harry A Dunn and Billy Ayre. Also included are people like Jamie Vardy, Lee Trundle and Dave Merris. Get voting, would be nice to see a Boro player make the final list.

Plus Kenny Lowe and Gary Bradshaw - same one I assume? Also Ben Seddon when he inexplicably changed sides for 10 seconds in the 120th minute of the ‘76 Trophy Final.
