"It is a scandal that these Scarborough lads will have to go to the likes of Pickering and Whitby to play, and it’s a shame for the football fans in the town as well"

Looks like were not in with much of a shout, its a shame for the fans in the town that it seems like every effort is being made to encourage the lads to trial for anywhere but Athletic.

How do we know we offered any of them terms?

Just playing devils advocate here. How many would improve the first eleven? Can you imagine the uproar if we did sign several players but then not play them? BF would get torrents of stick for supposed biasedness towards his favourites.

The one person we need to sign in some kind of capacity is Mitch Cook (stands by for heaps of abuse!)

Mitch Cook is an excellent coach, and I would hope that discussions are ongoing between him and our board to find a role for him with Scarborough Athletic FC.

Anyone care to speculate whether mitch is still working with the academy? Or even better someone phone him up an do some investigative journalism

There are other great coaches who aren't working at the moment.

Franz Beckenbauer or Johan Cruyff would be brilliant and have great experience.
Graeme Souness has won trophies all over Europe perhaps we could give him a call.

Given the club lost money last year, bringing in extra coaches just because they are out of work might not be a good idea. It's not about personality and if we had a vacancy MC probably would be a decent candidate. The reality is that we don't have a vacancy and probably can't afford to create one. From the Q&A we know that the football budget is effectively the same as last year and bringing in another coach would leech money from it. Money that would be better spent on a centre half or a midfielder.

I'd also be concerned about the signal it would send to the other coaches.

that Mitch is seen by most as a stalwart of Scarborough football for 3 generations….He is also an integral part of the academy…….He has invaluable experience of local football and him moving to Athletic could break down the barriers in many Town/undecided fans heads….

I agree I wouldnt hire him just for the sake of it but think a role for Mitch would make a lot of sense for Athletic commercially and for the future of football in the Town…..Absolute bonus is that it looks like he would come without Towns board.

but if the main aim is for the lads to be representing Scarborough I would have like to have seen Mitch come out with something along the lines of

"I will be contacting Brian France and seeing if the lads can attend trials for SAFC"

as a positive guesture.

It’s like we don’t even count in their eyes.

If we can secure some kind of role for Mitch that would be great and players would hopefully follow.

I agree with a lot of things you say on this forum Rob, but I can’t agree with the Mitch Cook role. I recall the St Nicholas hotel meeting which would have been an ideal opportunity for Mitch to come on board, but he chose to go another route. I can’t recall anytime when he has shown any interest either in Scarborough Athletic or the Back to Boro scheme. His comments in tonights paper sums it up for me, when he mentions both Pickering and Whitby yet fails to mention SAFC at all. I don’t doubt for one minute his experience and coaching capabilities, however, I’ve always had the impression, rightly or wrongly, that he would prefer to be our rival as opposed to our efforts of unity. I think there are good things ahead for us this season with aims of promotion and our continuous push to come home and would welcome an enthusiastic Mitch Cook but I fear a long wait.

Do we know that any Town lads have been approached?

Brian might be satisfied with the excellent squad he is assembling.

And even if an offer is made to a Town player , he may feel that Pickering or Whitby is easier in terms of travelling to training.

Could speculate all day. Would be nice to hear from Town players on their views and their perceived reluctance to sign for Athletic.

I’ve not seen Town play for a long, long time. For those of you that have watched them more often, which players would you like to see in the SAFC first team squad? Which ones have the potential for the first team, and - in your opinion - which would you like to see develop in the SAFC reserves?

Experienced in league as a player and coached to a high level…..Would be a great addition to the Athletic set up imo.

Hopefully a role can be found for Mitch. Not as manger obviously. But a position that offer a mutually beneficial relationship between us and the Academy.

Saw them a couple of times last season. Captain stood out for me. Small lad. Barber maybe? Not sure. That one though.

If Town players haven’t been approached or aren’t being considered then that really makes all the moaning about Town ridiculous because in the end Athletic didn’t/doesn’t want them how can you bitch about them playing for someone that does? There should be a seperate Tryout for theTown players just as a show of good faith in my opinion.

RE: RE: RE: Telling quote by Rude Dog User: Rude Dog

Town players were not approached as Athletic were trying to build bridges with Town and didnt want it to look like they were being opportunistic vultures praying on the carcass of a recent kill….

Athletic did it out of a sense of fairness to Town and by doing so Whitby and Pickering got first dabs on their best players….

By the looks of it we might aswell not have bothered as they are gonna off and play in the Teeside league (not sure who is gonna play or manage as both Mitch and team seem to have gone) but that is upto them I guess….

Makes a mockery of their claims they were doing what was best for football in the Town though……They were and still are doing what is best for them personally.

up to this point hasnt it been the opinion that the SAFC staff felt none of the STFC players were up to the standard that SAFC play at? If the better players move on and a newer crop plays in the Teeside are they not then developing players?
If the clubs merge tomorrow what happens to theTown players who dont make the1st 18 for SAFC? Reserves?

Nobody ever said they werent good enough but scouting them would have caused world war 3….

"Is this not developing players?" What going tits up so all your players have to find clubs at the last minute while still hoping they are prepared to still go and play for you in a league they were promoted out of two years ago? You should work for the government with spin like that.

Nobodys moaning, the point that was made was that it would be nice to hear some reciprocation of good will from the other side. Atleast then any suspicions can be ruled out….you tell me when Mitch has EVER mentioned Athletic in a quote relating to player progression smart arse?

I think Mitch never mention’s Athletic because otherwise he has to acknowledge that there is a senior side other than Town in Scarborough, and they will never do that. Childish.

Onwards and Upwards with the Boro.

No, it means mitch and the players understandably don.t want to drop down to a league where they have already proved they are far too good. What the committee do is a different matter.

Wouldnt say it shows a lack of commitment, would say it is possibly a sign of frustration that two years of graft have been thrown away by a poor decision to quite the Wearside league before the planning permission was gained at Pindar (no matter what people were saying permission was still up in the air)

I think it shows that they don’t feel the current town side going into that league and winning 8 or 9-0 every week is good for the development of the players. It is something for which Mitch Cook and the players should be praised not criticised.
