again, like SK said it gets him game time, and midfield is the area in which we’re pretty well endowed at this point in time. I’d have been more concerned if he’d gone to one of our league rivals

Game time by Tommy Wooton

Four players leaving in such a short period of time made me ponder a bit about how fickle we are in football. I suppose I must be old fashioned, but I would love us to build and maintain a squad that is strong, tight knit and sustainable, so that, even though we are non league, we could perhaps start dreaming of legacy. Instead, like all over in football, and particularly where contracts aren’t always available, players are dispensable and go ‘to get game time’ as a matter of course. Making that comment in such an understated way, just serves to abdicate responsibility: why have we not been able to coach or manage players well enough to be able to give them game time? Instead, are we saying that we will trust someone else to improve them, because we can’t? And then we’ll have them back? Why did we sign them in the first place if they were not up to standard? Talent doesn’t just disappear, but confidence does. I hope the back room staff really consider how to get the best out of all our players, instead of taking the easy way out, imo, by just bringing others on to the conveyor belt.

I was not advocating in the slightest that anyone is rubbish or should be sacked, merely that I was saddened that we were unable to keep hold of players I would have liked to see still at the club. Keeping a squad of players together, especially one as good as ours, is difficult for anyone and I was simply wondering about what part man management or the lack of had played in our players having to leave particularly in light of non league constraints, such as non contracted players, restricted coaching time, work pressures and travelling etc. My musings were simply placed within a forum context and I apologise if you felt they had to be answered with sarcasm.

…by it’s very nature non contract players leads to conveyor belt player movement. If we have squad players not playing then we aren’t paying either. These fringe lads are losing opportunity for extra coin. It’s real life.

As for man management. 1 league defeat since February.

these lads have a dream of playing at a certain level along come boro offering to fulfill there ambitions.. however we have an elephant in the room… Scarborough os a looooonnng way from anywhere.. if stavely or BTOB or Ossett are you alternative of choice thats a 150 mile round trip minimum to each home game training session.. then to be a bench warmer or occasional player.. nah like these lads in the prime of their carreer i d want to be playing on a saturday afternoon not sitting it out on the bench..

i keep going round in circles

We had a match day squad of 16 yesterday. Plus 3 other players who were not available and/or were not selected. Plus the 2 (3 if you include Dempsey) who have left. That’s 6 players who would not have been part of the match day squad this week and so would not have been paid this week (I presume). These lads are incurring costs.

Some of them will feel that they have left to get some match fitness and will be able to force themselves back into SK’s plans. I am sure others will have already ‘called time’ on their Boro careers.

In addition, several other forum contributors have suggested we could do with bringing players in !!

We’ve not got 20 players on contracts. We can’t prevent players moving on if they want to (and I am certain if we were not having a good season then some players might be looking at leaving).

No he was at the game, but watching it, I think SK explained it to Will in his interview.
