Sporting Memories Session - Tuesday 22 May 3pm-4pm by Club.comms User: Club.comms

Posted: 15/5/2018 at 10:42:21, 166 views.

A Sporting Memories Taster Session is taking place at the Scarborough Sports Village on Ashburn Road on Tuesday 22 May from 3pm-4pm.

The Sporting Memories Foundation support older people across the UK living with dementia, depression and loneliness by engaging them in social activities and helping them to recall memories of watching or playing sport. By sharing memories of sporting moments and tapping into a passion for sport, they help people to connect with others and reawaken positive thoughts and feelings that otherwise remain hidden away.

The session will be FREE and very informal, but give you the opportunity to reminisce about your sporting memories.

Please pass on details to anyone you think may be interested!

Contact Matt Hewison on 01723 232551 for further details.

Although with the cup final still to be played, effectively our season isn’t finished and the management is probably still focussing on preparing for that. Hopefully all of not most of them will remain with us. They’d be mad not to! ;-)

I thought there was a timeline before anyone could actually sign on. Don’t they simply commit a promise to sign on at this stage which doesn’t always mean that they will. I really don’t know.

In case anyone hasn’t seen the full list these are the teams in the NPL next season :

Bamber Bridge
Basford United
Buxton
Farsley Celtic
Gainsborough Trinity
Grantham Town
Hyde United
Lancaster City
Marine AFC
Matlock Town
Mickleover Sports
Nantwich Town
North Ferriby United
Scarborough Athletic
Shaw Lane AFC
South Shields
Stafford Rangers
Stalybridge Celtic
Warrington Town
Whitby Town
Witton Albion
Workington AFC

I’m looking forward to my closest away game already. Once the fixtures are out I can do a list of Staffords best pubs to visit if anyone is interested. Its been quite a while since we played each other. 14 years ago I think, 2 - 1 to Stafford in the FA trophy. Chris Senior for you and Danny Davidson with 2 for us. I came to that game and I’m still here!!!!!
Will still continue to visit and support my 2nd non league team next season. May even go to Middlesborough next Wednesday.

Went on a Boro bus.
all I can remember is when we arrived at the ground there
was a load of Wolves fans hanging around acting like twats.
so nothing will have changed.
Missed the Trophy final against them
as I’d just got married so had other things on my mind
such as moving into my house in town, paying the mortgage
and working Saturday afternoon & evening at The Penthouse.
The Sunday return by Boro’s winners down Seamer Road was watched by
me and the Mrs from the Mount Hairpin as we drank a couple of
bottles of Champagne and ate wild strawberries.
Nice weather for it as well.

Stafford memories… by willesden seadog User: willesden seadog

Posted: 12/5/2018 at 07:17:46, 219 views. In reply to 'Last time I was a Stafford would be 1973'

I went to Marston Road for what I presumed was Boro’s last ever NPL game (how little I knew!) on a Sunday in 1979. Stafford defeated Kettering Town in the FA Trophy Final six days later.

The 1976 final at Wembley was a fantastic occasion. I think that there were 3 or 4 special trains direct to Wembley Central. I was with my Mum, Dad and two younger brothers on a train which I think was split between the Plaxtons, Scarborians and Mere Social Clubs. 3 great institutions now sadly missing from the town. It’s strange how you remember bits of days so long ago, yet some can’t remember who’s round it is! The Eurovision Song Contest was the week before and for some reason I couldn’t get the Austrian song out of my head.

We grabbed something to eat at a rather posh sounding, but bang ordinary “lunchette” on Wembley High Road unaware of the total mayhem a few hundred yards away at The Green Man pub where a pitch battle was going on between the two sets of fans. Inside the stadium Boro fans were to the west at the other end to the tunnel. Sporadic fighting was taking place on the terracing as Stafford fans came round. We had gone “posh” as in 75 against Matlock and were upstairs down the side, after sitting on the benches below against Wigan in 73 had taught us a lesson with the poor views.

It was a cracking game of football. There was a huge shock in the Boro support as Colin Appleton had selected Chris Dale for the game, who only made occasional appearances throughout the season. The master tactician would be proved correct once again. If memory serves me correctly we took the lead through John Woodall. Rangers had a really good team with future Blackburn and Everton goalkeeper Jim Arnold in the nets and a forward Roger Jones who had refused to shave throughout the run.

I can remember going out to the loo and a steward telling me I needed my ticket in future. An early welcome to officialdom gone mad. Rangers were leading 2-1 when Derek Abbey equalised. The match went to extra time where Arnold saved a Woodall penalty before Sean Marshall scored the winner from the spot near the very end with a replay at Bramall Lane looking highly likely.

In customary fashion we remained behind and applauded both sets of teams off before wandering back to the station where more drama was unfolding. A young copper decided we were too late for the special. He wasn’t going to let many several Boro fans through the barrier. It was getting rather fraught and feisty. In the end a combination of big blokes shoving him and the common sense of an older officer allowed us through with minutes to spare before departure.

The adults partied on the train emptying the bars of drinks, while us youngsters read both the Trophy programme and one for the Southampton v Man Utd Cup Final a week later. They were always on sale in the corridors of Wembley at the Trophy Final. We went past a Stafford train and despite a few crude hand gestures there was plenty of mutual respect too.

Apart from that I can remember bugger all!

If I’m not mistaken Boro won the NRSC 3-2 against a Middlesbrough side at The Athletic Ground including first team regular Alan Foggon a week or so later with Steve Deere a goalscoring hero with another rocket free kick?

Funny you mentioned big Derek Rob saw him down town last weekend. Another local lad that seem to get a lot of stick from the Scarborough fans but never seem to bother him. Scored some important goals for Scarborough over a few seasons, his goal v Cristal Palace in the FA Cup springs to mind. Match highlights shown on Match of the day on the Saturday night.

Derek Abbey.. by willesden seadog User: willesden seadog

Posted: 12/5/2018 at 13:29:16, 217 views. In reply to 'RE: Stafford memories…'

Used to take stick from the Shed. Usually a group stood near the Seamer Road end. None of them were ever good enough to play for the first team but slagged Derek off instead because he was local and did well. There were local lads with more talent, but you need more than that to succeed. Derek had discipline and he listened.

He scored twice at Wembley, but his best performance ever was when he marked Mossley’s Leo Skeete out of the game one match. Skeete had caused Boro havoc the game before but he never got a kick as Derek followed Colin Appleton’s instructions to a tee.

Top servant for the club. Played for many years in the reserves as well and then became groundsman. A really decent unassuming bloke as well.

Further recollections of Stafford… by willesden seadog User: willesden seadog

Posted: 12/5/2018 at 14:21:29, 190 views. In reply to 'Derek Abbey..'

They were awful to watch in the NPL days playing a cynical offside trap and boring the hell out of us.

Boro were struggling one afternoon at The Athletic Ground as was the norm against Rangers and getting nowhere with the ref offering nothing. I think it was John Woodall who fired in a shot and it hit the ref on the head and knocked him over. The Shed counted - 6, 7, 8, 9 ,10 OUT! The ref had to be replaced by a more sympathetic senior linesman. If I remember rightly a volunteer qualified ref took over from the crowd to run the line. I certainly remember Danny Payne doing it one match, so it could have been him? Boro went on to win. Maybe 3-1?

Stafford were also the first team I can remember wearing an advert on their shirts at the Athletic Ground - Evo Stik.

I certainly remember the Wembley game against Stafford, and travelled on the same train as Rob (Willesden) and his family. We were all passionate supporters. We won which made our day, but I also remember after the match, the ugly scenes as their supporters attacked a group of our fans on the way to the train. They were confronted by a young PC. who managed to avert any further confrontation. The Stafford fans had the last laugh however, as when their train pulled away from the station, my pal waved his Boro. scarf and bag and one of them grabbed it in passing. Must finally mention Bob Bernard, my great pal who never got to see his Boro.team return home. ! RIP Bob.

Seems a logical thing to do to ask on here and to get a reply rather than get a deluge of direct questions to the club? Or have I missed something?

Not having a go, just commenting because I’d also like to know the answer! Would you rather I email the club directly asking this?

Yes, because I do not know the answer and there are not too many officials who read this forum (and even fewer who respond). Therefore if you want a straight answer its for the best rather than everybody having a “punt" on here.

Ha ok no probs I think it’s just usually a question like that has a fairly standard answer but I guess this game is a one off! I’ll send an email.

How odd….. by mrs trellis User: mrs trellis

Someone with your exact username asked this exact question and had it answered last week.

“The club" as you put it are volunteers.

Why not offer to help them rather than wondering why they haven’t personally reached out to you and told you how to get transport for a distance of less than 50 miles with only six weeks notice.

If the supporters bus is full why not put a post on here and ask if a grown up can give you a lift.

Maybe you could offer to pay petrol or bring some sweets. Make sure you don’t forget your ticket and perhaps take a little spending money for a programme. Even though it is summer time it can get cold in the shade so you should also make sure that you have packed a sweater or light jacket.

Not everyone can be this silly but it is nice to see so many trying.

Fair comment but…… by mrs trellis User: mrs trellis

Fair comment and maybe I was a little harsh but….

Your original post didn’t come across as saying “I’m struggling for transport because Ken’s bus is full".

I read your post as a whining complaint that the club had failed you in some way by not organising an additional bus or engaging with Shoreline Suncruisers.

Given that “the club" are volunteers who in addition to the successful day to day running of the club are now overseeing the ground developments and setting up the Boro hub the implied criticism seemed unfair.

As I said in my original post why not, as others have, specifically ask for a lift on here and make something happen for yourself rather than suggesting that others haven’t don’t something for you.

I don’t doubt your commitment and have sympathy for your predicament but the inconsiderate tone of your post irritated me. Hence the smart arse response.

Good luck getting a lift sorted.

Would Grimsby extending his contract stop him playing in the final? He was contracted to them throughout the season afterall, or has his loan spell concluded?

Boro Hub: How can we help? by SAFC Admin

Posted: 8/5/2018 at 17:57:33, 361 views.

The Boro Hub is coming soon to Scarborough Town Centre near the Market Vaults. The Boro Hub will form part of a physical point for supporters to shop, contact and volunteer to support the club whilst also providing useful club space.

With the aim of the Hub to be self-sufficient, the club is requesting the following from supporters and the local community:

1. Time. Are you able to give up some time during the week to help resource the Hub? The Hub will not work without this.
2. Seating. Do you have unwanted and good condition seating to make the Hub resourceful for supporters and the community?
3. We require a small and secure safe to keep our valuable belongings safe.
4. Telecommunications. A working chordless phone would be appreciated to take in queries from fellow seadogs.
5. Do you have any other ideas that could work for the Hub that are practical and realistic? We would like to hear from you at: [email protected]

Please note: In order for the Hub to be a success, we require the resourcefulness of the club and community. As soon as the above can be attained, we can look to operate and provide opportunities for the club and supporters.

TIA

Up the Boro
