our Doodsons League cup game at either Atherton or Bamber Bridge will be on 22nd March (a Thursday) and squeezed in between Mossley away on the Tuesday and Atherton away on the Saturday. Have we got a big enough squad to cope with this??

Didn’t see much comment from those there (probably looked different in real time) but that was a penalty for that pull down on Walshaw in first half.

I was convinced it was a penalty (as were those around me). So whilst we got lucky with a few moments in the game, we should also have had a penalty and the Tom White shot was agonizingly close.

Yes, I thought it was definitely a penalty for the foul on Walshaw. There were other instances too where he was fouled and the ref gave nothing. He does tend to invite fouls the way he backs into defenders. He goes fishing for fouls. It’s one of his “skills" that I guess the referees are well aware of.

Incidentally, if you freeze the video at 4.02, just after Tommy Taylor’s terrific penalty save, and look immediately behind the goal to the left of the stewards - that’s the group of lads who were (according to Bamber Bridge official twitter feed) “causing trouble". I notice they’ve since deleted that tweet as it was a bit of an exaggeration. However that group were certainly being very obnoxious, overly aggressive and some of them were drunk. Not violent though. Bamber Bridge stewards did a good job of separating them from their own fans.

summoning up his inner Joe Cracknell there and preserving our 4th successive clean sheet there (and our third 0-0). They’ve never beaten us at there place but then again we’ve never beaten them at “our" place, although that was Queensgate, so hopefully a new venue will bring us new luck against them!

Wasn’t pretty at times but we got the job done by hook or by crook.

That was some penalty save. Blasted hard to his left he did well to touch it, never mind get enough on to divert it onto the bar.

Nothing was getting past him today. It was a near faultless display. At one point i was worried because it looked like he was going to have to be subbed due to a knock to the head but he carried on.

Just got back by Armchairdog User: Armchairdog

Posted: 24/2/2018 at 17:34:59, 218 views.

Not a classic by any stretch. We had a strong wind behind us in the first half but we didn’t really get our passing game going. They looked pretty dangerous going forward and could have scored 2 or 3 in all honesty but for some poor finishing and the woodwork helping us out. Certainly they had more chances than us so I think SK will be very relieved to come away with a point.

The ref was very poor. He booked Bailey Gooda for no good reason and he just didn’t seem to want to give us anything. Walshshaw was clearly fouled seconds before the ref awarded them a pen. Even Brig fans were slagging the ref off.

I’d give MOM award to either Tommy Taylor or Bailey Gooda. Both were outstanding.

Very good turnout from Boro fans. Although a small minority behind our goal in the first half looked to be getting a bit over exuberant and stewards were needed to separate them from the home fans.

Todays top results - by Burniston User: Burniston

Posted: 24/2/2018 at 17:05:26, 221 views.

Hyde were always going to win at home to Kendal.
Shields massively dropping home points against a lowly side (proves no games are easy).
Bamber failed to grab a lifeline by again drawing at home.
Boro get a valuable point away from home in a very difficult match. (with the help of lady luck).

Big match on Tuesday night Bamber at home to Hyde.

A bl***y good result for us today. I would have settled for that before the game. This was, on paper, our toughest remaining game, though there are no easy games between now and May and we have to play this lot again at home in a couple of weeks

Bamber are a hard team to play against, competent and well organised. They have lost only once at home this season and have lost less games than us in total. Add to that that we have difficulty in keeping a clean sheet today’s backs to the wall performance rates very highly in my book

Bamber remain 7pts behind us for what could possibly be an auto promotion 3rd place. We still have a game in hand over Hyde for auto promotion in 2nd place and could it just be that the pressure of being everybody’s favourite for promotion since before a ball was kicked this season is now beginning to get to Shields ? - as in all sports confidence is a very big factor in football

Well done to SK and all the team

South Shields winning this league was never a given. Clearly they were always going to be strong favourites but now that we are nearing the business end of the season maybe they are starting to feel the weight of expectation. They can’t shrug us off. Along with Hyde, we have been breathing down their necks all the way. And that’s in a division that, given their resources, they should be winning at a canter. Today they were unable to beat a 10 man Radcliffe. The pressure is starting to tell!

Odd really, that Bamber could be doing themselves a disservice by taking points off the top three. If they pull down the PPG average of the third placed team such that it doesn’t get that extra promotion spot, they suddenly find themselves as the second favourites in the playoffs, rather than hot favourites to go up as the fourth team.

I love how you put that Hyde were “always going to" win a home to Kendal, yet presumably if they had dropped points and South Shields had won, it’d be a case of “South Shields were always going to win at home to lowly Radcliffe, but Hyde’s dropped points show no games are easy!" ;-)

Unless we get the full three points it appears Hyde Utd. will leapfrog us in the table - and with their form at the moment - and given that they’ve already played Shields twice - it’s going to be very difficult to regain second place. We’d literally have to rely on them slipping up. For me it’s got to be three points today.

But we’ve got a game in hand over Hyde? Meaning that in this far-fetched hypothetical situation where Hyde win every game here on in, it would still be in our own hands.

A draw would be fine today.

I suppose it could be a lot worse: we could have been one down at the break had a Taylor not brilliantly saved the spot kick onto his crossbar. Boro’ usually perform better in the second half as well.

NCEL Premier title race by Malton Seadog User: Malton Seadog

Posted: 22/2/2018 at 12:15:10, 213 views.

Hopefully we won’t be playing the winner next season, but it’s a fascinating race.

AFC Mansfield top with 76 points from 32 games.
Handsworth second with 66 points from 31 games.
Pontefract third with 63 points from 25 games.
Pickering fourth with 63 points from 28 games.

So Pontefract have seven games in hand and are 13 points behind. If they can survive Saturday/Tuesday until the end of the season, I’d say they’re the clear favourites.

Pickering not out of it either. Four games in hand and 13 points behind!

Exciting stuff.

Remember that in most of the step 5 leagues this season TWO teams will be going up, (to make up for so many teams being lost at the top end of our step 4 leagues)

AFC Mansfield and Pontefract’s grounds might need some work doing, unless they’re relaxing the rules. Compulsory promotion will cause all sorts of problems for ground grading.

For clubs going to Step 4 ie Pickering, AFC Mansfield etc

And whilst both Pontefract and Pickering were winning handsomely last Saturday, and again midweek, Mansfield suffered their first home defeat to mid table Liversedge, losing 1-5. Far from over.

None he only had about 2 touches and surface was horrible to play on
We had one chance for the long throw but he never used it as we were 3-0 at time I guess he wasn’t risking giving ball away

Remarkably, that’s the record we’d need from this moment on to equal last season’s record which got us 3rd! Somehow, I don’t think 73 points will get 3rd position this season! More like 93…

Non-League Set Up for 2018-19 by willesden seadog User: willesden seadog

An interesting chart based on current league placings. The creation of the Central Football League means plenty of clubs could be moving from their present competition owing to geography as well as promotion and relegation.

Can anyone recall how many promotion/relegation spots will be available for Northern Premier and Northern D1N/S next season? Had a look around but can’t find anything.

I’d imagine 2 promotion spots from the Premier? 1 automatic, 1 playoff? Extrapolated across the four Step 4 divisions, that would be 8 promoted sides, with 4 relegated from each of National Leagues North and South. Hard to see more than four relegated from each of those divisions.

interesting line up of clubs. I would suspect tho’ that this has been counted from the North down. Since the southern leagues seem to be calling the shots still (and are running these new divs apparently) I would suspect they will count from the Channel up, rather than the Scottish border down.
It doesn’t sound much but it is important & will make a difference.

I appreciate its also only a guess on the clubs that will be promoted/relegated in 2018.

Well we still hope this won’t end up involving the Celts- hoping for/competing for the play-offs. Assuming however that we are still in the NPL next season, then I have a nasty feeling it wont look as neat as that come August 2018.
The point I was making is that if you start counting from 1 end of the country, then it ends up suiting that first group best, then the next group, and end up with basically what’s left making up the last group.
It would be nice IF it was done with the north in mind first, but I bet it isn’t.
A few tweaks in promotion/relegation and it could look a whole different picture. Good to see it written out like that tho’- thanks for that example.
A long-standing bugbear of mine is how there’s 2 divs promoting from the south, and only 1 from the north - leading to a continuing imbalance when you reach the conference.
This in itself wont really solve it - as there’s still the 2 divs vs 1…vs 1 from 2018.
