Today’s game by seadog365 User: seadog365

Posted: 7/4/2018 at 19:06:20, 144 views.

It was another nervy one for the sizeable Boro contingent who had made the trip down the A614. We got an early lead which should have settled the nerves but then couldn’t find the killer touch after that on another difficult pitch. It was always a toss up as to which of Sinclair or Curtis scored against us, and in the end it was Nathan. All looked bleak until the other Nathan popped up with a SCREAMER and the team ran to celebrate with the fans by the side of the athletics track. Then when we won a penalty and Coulo confidently tucked it away it was game, set and match, the first time we’d had a cushion in the whole game. The other results elsewhere only adding to the collective joy in the Boro camp.

Now we have to it again against a Radcliffe side who will be properly rested, having not played since we beat them on Easter Saturday!!

Rested players by Joe90

Was a strange decision to have white and the new lad not even on the bench, am guessing injured or am hoping giving a rest for Tuesday?… we look a little weak on the bench. Am glad Hewit went to right back today… I noticed today how much Hume is involved in the game with SK just playing a watching role. Would like to see SK a little more active and passion.

Yeah I’m pretty sure White, Dawson and Johnson were all being rested just like Valentine had been previously - with so many games coming thick and fast it really is a balancing act between getting out a side who can win the game and making sure the players don’t over-exert themselves and become too tired.

Will Baines said on commentary that Dawson and White were being rested and Johnson and Cadman were both injured. Johnson could hardly walk after the Taddy game and Cadman’s season looks like it’s probably over.

Yes, having listened back to SK’s interview, he confirmed that JJ was injured, but was hopeful he might be OK for Tuesday so it doesn’t sound too serious, but I did indeed fear the worst when Cadders limped off the other night, he really has had no luck with injuries this season.

Equally Greenwich are still the “ones to watch" as they are still the ones who are doing best on a points per game basis and in theory therefore the “Best" of the chasing pack.

At the risk of usurping Hungry Jose … the following look like the key games for the 3rd place trophy this weekend:

Greenwich Borough (89.5) v Hythe Town (80.4)

Egham Town (16th in Evostik SE) v Dunstable (89)

Maldon & Tiptree (75.8) v Bowers & Pitsea (88.6)

Corinthian Casuals (88.6) v Lewes (1st in Bostik S)

Belper (12th in Evostik S) v Frickley (86)

Arsley Town (22nd in Evostik SE) v Hayes & Yeading (86)

Potters Bar (85.8) v Bury Town (10th in Bostik N)

Some of those teams, such as Frickley for example, have so much to do compared with how they’ve been doing so far that I’m not overly “worried" about them, or at least not as concerned as the spectre of Bamber Bridge/Prescot overtaking us for 3rd (which would take a collapse by us, but then so would some of those teams ending the season above us on PPG)

Agreed. The challenge looks like coming from Evostik SE. Essentially we’ve got a four point headstart, and better goal difference by six, on Hartley & Wintney.

It’s not unreasonable to think that we might get 17 points from our remaining fixtures give or take a couple of points. Next three games are really important, eminently winnable and right before a couple of tricky looking away games.

My thinking is that there’s three ‘challengers’ from Evostik SE - Hartley & Wintney, Dunstable and Cambridge City - each of which is capable of getting 89+ points. Greenwich Borough and Corinthian Casuals in Bostik S can get both get to 89ish points but only have 5 games left (not sure whether that is a positive or a negative) and Cray Wanderers 4 games left (they can get to around 85. But because they are in a 24 team/46 game division their points are worth proportionately less. In our terms (GEEK WARNING: I have a spreadsheet - sorry) a point in that division is worth only 0.91 were it a 42 game division (a win = 2.73 points in effect). That means both teams have only 13.7 points left to play for, compared to Boro’s 21. At the moment they all sit above Boro if you adjust for a 42 game league (Greenwich 75.8, Corinthians and Cray 74.9) but, in effect Boro have roughly 3.5, 3.5 and 4.5 games in hand over those teams. By contrast the Evostik SE teams have, respectively, 21, 21 and 24 points left available to them - being a 42 game league, they get full value for each point. Maybe that gives them more scope to slip up?

All conjecture in any case, and hopefully we can make it all irrelevant by getting past Hyde. If not, though 18/21 points (probably 17 based on superior goal difference) would definitely be good enough to grab that 3rd place trophy (assuming Hartley & Wintney win all their games). The next three games are massive, very winnable games on that basis.

Whilst I admire your self-proclaimed “geekiness” on this subject, after today’s disastrous results for the Bostik South I’ve now flipped my opinion on it’s head, and as Hungry Joe has pointed out, if we get to 87 points (ten more) we’d usurp anything any of the leagues other than EvoStik SE could do. So I’m now thinking of that league as our “biggest” rival.

And when you think about it, that’s a 22-team league like ourselves. So it’s not even about “points per game” in that division, it’s about points. We’re already on 77, whereas the likes of Hartley Witney (70), Dunstable (69) and Cambridge City (68) have it all to do. They’re basically Bamber Bridge.

So all in all, after today’s excellent results, I genuinely do feel that 10 more points does it !!

Tadcaster Davidson by Joe90

Posted: 6/4/2018 at 12:12:01, 166 views.

Would like him so much back at Boro, would have him any day over Luke Dean, not sure why he left us in the first place, not sure SK liked him. We missed Cadman when he went off but the new lad looked promising but a little light, its quite a balancing act at this level small/lightweight footballers against midfield enforcers.. I think Davidson does both jobs

Having watched them last night for the first time away, I still feel we need some better quality, especially on the bench. Not quite sure why price is ahead of Valentine.
Walshaw is such a clever player, does lots of the ugly work and knows how to win freekicks, was great watching the battle he was having with the centre-halves.

Wright always seemed to have 2 players on him which we should be trying to exploit using the space it leaves. Our midfield should be coming across more to support along with the right back

We have 2 good centrebacks, perhaps not the tallest but battlers and Gooda is quite a footballer in that position. Am afraid our right back isn’t good enough and everytime the ball went close to him as there left winger was having the better of him. I would perhaps be wanting to try Hewit back at left back and look to strengthen in the Summer with another centre-half and left back. Also be looking for a new right back that position seems to pick itself every week and little competition.

Not sure the first team is as strong as people think and possibly have too many similar players of the same quality/build playing the same positions. This leaves other areas of the team a little weak and no real competition on the bench.

Disagree on Davidson, I thought he was a cracking player for us, one of my favourite players, always loved the way he could turn away from opposition players and change the direction of play. But I wasn’t impressed with him at all last night, lots of narky little fouls and misplaced passes. Thought he was lucky not to get sent off after hauling Dawson(?) down near the byline just after he’d (finally) been booked, but somehow the ref saw it the other way!

Walshaw is a class act, but didn’t see enough of the ball at his feet last night for me.

Totally agree… Davison for me would be a step backwards. Hes put some timber on and got away with murder last night before being finally booked. Dean has been our best midfielder…. maybe not brilliant last night but still been a massive player for us.
Would love to keep white next season - class player getting better with more games after lots of injuries

Interesting you bring him up - of course we had him last season, and at first I wasn’t overly impressed, having heard good things about him from SAfc supporters.
He definitely grew on me/us, and he ended the season as a very popular player. I did wonder about him for the step -up to the glue lge top flight. Not sure he was/is pacy enough.
He did a good job for us, but when our new manager took over he told Pete he could stay & try the top flight with us BUT he had to train more (basically get fitter) - which he didn’t fancy, so stayed in the 2nd div & went with other Celts to Tad.

I would stick by the manger as its a work in progress.I never expected automatic promotion in the first season at home due to last years budget.with the extra money from this season we can offload some of the squad and bring in a few better quality players in.If he fails next season then he has to go though

Useful point in the circumstances by seadog365 User: seadog365

Posted: 6/4/2018 at 00:04:16, 147 views.

I was amazed by how many fans from both sides turned out on a Thursday night. Both keepers made a fantastic save each to keep their team in it, and whilst we had the better of the first half, taddy got more and more into it and by the end of the game it was more when they’d score than if, although they didn’t, if you get my drift!

That save from Tommy could yet win us promotion, although we’ll only know when the dust settles. Now we need to move on and get 6 points from the next two banana skin-ish away games. Just hope we didn’t run ourselves too much into the ground.

On an unrelated note, wonder why the footbridge was deemed surplus to requirements and taken down?

Agree, an even-ish game overall, either side could have nicked it. One great save from each keeper. Thought we missed Valentine, that’s not to denigrate any of the other midfield players, who all had decent games, but thought we missed his bite and attacking threat last night. On a related note, my first look at Dawson last night, definitely a stand out, the boy can play!

Last night’s point was a fair reflection of the game - a pretty even affair Was gutted for the lad, when Cadman had to go off, as he seems to have just cemented a starting place (deservedly so imo. He offers something different band is the best provider for our front 3.) hope it’s nothing more serious than bad bruising from a crunching foul and is back asap. Both goalkeepers were outstanding and Walshaw worked tirelessly as usual, though all the team put in a decent shift.

Apart from their ‘lissome’ players the best comparison is Walshaw’s ‘cynical scythe’ compared to their bookings which apparently come out of thin air. To be fair it appears to have been more balanced
in the 2nd half (different person doing it?)
