Sad news for Sports fans in Scarborough area by Old Git

Posted: 23/11/2018 at 12:29:07, 379 views.

Cayton stalwart Ted Deighton passes away aged 89

https://www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk/sport/cricket/cayton-stalwart-ted-deighton-passes-away-aged-89-1-9458702

Had some great summer Sundays in the late 50s early 60s North end of Cayton Bay
Kicking a ball around with Ted, Pete Chapman, his dad Eric, my Dad and over 2 dozen or so
others locals in up to 15 a side footy games on the sand while battling for territory with
the Reds & the Blues from NALGO camp. All that exercise, no wonder we all lived so long.
RIP Ted and we’ll still ‘keep playing football’ with a bit of cricket as well, if we can grab that hard sand
from the tourists.

Sounds slightly odd but as a 58yr old I remember playing against Cayton years ago whilst still being (or feeling) young and thinking he’s knocking on a bit, obviously he then performed much better than me.

FA Cup by Dewsbury User: Dewsbury

Posted: 21/11/2018 at 08:55:00, 202 views.

I went to the FA Cup replay between Bradford City and Aldershot Town last night. Now I know City are having a terrible season and are currently rooted to the bottom of League 1, so I was expecting the attendance to be poor. Only the lower half of the west stand was open for home fans, and the attendance was a very poor 2248. However, I had a quick flick through the other FA Cup replays last night, and there was a pattern of abysmally low crowd figures for Football League clubs at home.

Charlton Athletic v Mansfield Town 1910
Cheltenham Town v Ebbsfleet United 1435
Doncaster Rovers v Chorley 3048
Forest Green Rovers v Oxford United 1614

OK, I know Forest Green don’t get massive crowds, but that figure is still below their season average. What’s going on? Is the FA Cup now viewed so poorly by League clubs and fans alike? When did this happen? By contrast, non-league clubs seem to still revel in taking part in the competition. Or even “traditionally" non-league clubs such as Crawley whose crowd last night was 3120, around a 1000 more than their average this season.

Even at the early stages of the competition, our crowds for FA Cup matches still hold up, regardless of the level of the opposition. Is that a sign of respect for the Cup itself? And is it disrespectful of the fans of League clubs to not show up for Cup matches against lowly opposition?

RE: FA Cup by Malton Seadog User: Malton Seadog

Posted: 21/11/2018 at 10:18:40, 144 views. In reply to 'FA Cup'

599 Chorley fans at Doncaster, meaning just 2,449 paying home supporters. Their average gate is 7,905 (with away fans included).

424 Southend fans at Crawley, so 2,696 home supporters - more than Doncaster and Bradford!

I think there are a few things at play here. The FA Cup to League clubs can be a little like the Doodson Cup for us. Doncaster, for example, were playing for an away tie at Charlton (also League One) in the next round. If they draw at Charlton, and know that they’ll be at Manchester United, Arsenal, or Chelsea in the third round if they win the replay, it’ll be more than coincidence that the replay would be attended by the best part of 15,000. As it was, it was a horribly cold, November night, against a Conference North team, for a prize of a game away at a team in the same league. I’m not making excuses for Doncaster, but you can start to see why some fans might give it a miss. Tickets were only £10 though - so still disappointing.

It wasn’t just the replays either - Grimsby only had 1,900 there for the original Saturday game, and Accrington 1,200.

How do you make the 1st and 2nd Round of the cup more attractive? Simple on paper, but it’d never happen. Get the Premier League teams and Championship teams in at Round 1, and, as I believe is the case in Italy and/or Germany, the top tier team is always drawn away in the early rounds. Yes they might play their reserves, but it’d make the whole thing more attractive for League One to Non-League clubs. That would mean that the 32 non-league clubs who made it through might be drawn away at Accrington, but might also be drawn at home to Manchester City. The top tier clubs don’t take the FA Cup seriously anyway, so you might as well get them in earlier in the competition.

I can’t really explain it or put my finger on it but i am 30 and don’t get excited about the FA Cup as a stand out competition… I just like winning, so if its the Doodson or the FA Cup or NRSC or any cup, to me they are all equal. the FA Cup has a little more because 1. my parents have that same buzz like you do Simon and 2. You get a decent amount of cash for getting through 4 + rounds.

but that’s it. I cant explain why its like that but you can surmise from there.

i’m not even that young anymore!

Probably worth keeping in mind when threads about ownership models start is that most of York’s problems (as far as I can tell) stem from the regime of Jason McGill who runs the club for his own benefit having fallen out with York’s fan run trust including banning (not sure if that’s still state of play) Mr Howden who sometimes filmed us at Brid.

What would have been the odds of that?
Actually I think both them going down & us going up are long odds……………… but possible.

Options.
1) Picked up an injury pre match
2) Not happy about being on the bench.

If it’s 2) let’s hope this is good for the team and there is a computer battle for places. Alternatively he could flounce off to Whitby.🤔

Boro finally beat Marine by seadog365 User: seadog365

Posted: 17/11/2018 at 17:42:53, 198 views.

at the 4th attempt. A largely dominant first half display was met by a mixture of frustration, near misses, good goalkeeping and a couple of loud penalty shouts turned away. The second half began with a period of “Nantwich-style pressure" from them (we were again kicking the “wrong" way) but then Killock of all people put us into the lead. Marine were reduced to 10 men after a nasty challenge missed by the ref but spotted by the linesman, and then they had a purple patch and for a short moment you wouldn’t have known which side had ten men. But then their normally tight defensive unit went awol, allowing Coulo an open net for the 1000th league goal of the club’s career and after that we held out comfortably for a win, a Marine free kick whizzing past the post notwithstanding.

My personal opinions on a game come from what I see and are coloured by what I like. I saw us win the game 2-0, which should be it really. Well done and onwards and upwards. However, having high expectations of further improvement, there are other considerations. I also saw today a style of football that should only be used on a needs must basis and not as a default mode. i.e. brawn and bluster and booming the ball long and chasing after it, especially with the class of player we have, playing at home on a consistent, flat surface and against a near bottom of the league team. I like to see a little bit of football played at least, which was in short supply and on the ground transition through the thirds was non existent.

The same principle goes for the players. I’m not interested in where they were born, who their family and friends are, how many times they’ve played for a manager or how old they are. I don’t dislike any of them because I see that they all try to give of their best. Do I have favourites who I like to see play? Of course, just like every single person who has an interest in football. Gooda at the back is strong, assertive, focused and reliable. Walshaw up front is hard working, tenacious, makes himself a pest for the opposition and is a proven goal scorer. In the middle, Cadman is the one for me who is the most effective conduit and creative link between back and front. However, as long as we play the rather outdated hoof and chase style, such a player becomes irrelevant as we end up playing a 1:8:2 formation. Also as long as the manager seemingly regards a ‘flair’ player in a disparaging way, he’ll end up on the bench regularly, despite waiting for his chance, taking it, getting player of the month and working hard.

Still, we won, we’re top of the league. Well done and onwards and upwards

Spot on with your opinion.I thought marine played the better football kept the ball on the deck, and were unlucky not to score, we seem to have lost that ability to quickly pass and move the ball to our forwards. Also what’s worrying is what’s happening with valentine one minute he,s down to play the next he,s storming off !!! His he another player set to go ?

Scarborough Athletic is about much more than the performance on the pitch.

It’s about seeing your mates, catching up and having a laugh. It’s about being part of something special. It’s about family. It’s about community.

It’s about joining together to stand together.

It’s about “sisters”, and “brothers” doing it for their selves.

It’s about playing a part and having that opportunity to contribute.

Top of the league -3 points-clean sheet-1000th league goal… That’s a nice little bonus.

1200 people there yesterday who went home happy.

At least one who needs to let a bit of love into his (or her) life.

I don’t think facetiousness was invited by my personal opinions on a particular game and personal preferences on particular styles of play and personnel. God forbid that anyone comments on footballing matters on a footballing forum. It’s your prerogative to prefer the long ball, smash and grab style, and have a particular preference of players, but please don’t suggest that my post was in any way calling for anyone to be ousted.

What are our priorities? by Tom Purdy

Posted: 18/11/2018 at 15:06:17, 152 views. In reply to 'RE: Re:'

I am an exiled seadog, I live near Doncaster so see more away matches than home games. For me (who has supported The mighty Boro for 30 years) believe firmly that promotion has got to be the priority. I dream of being back in the football league - but after another few years. Sometimes you have to mix it. We would all love free flowing football aka Man City but life isn’t all about what you wish. I have stood on terraces in mid January watching a dull 0-0 or 1-0 defeat on many occasions. We want as a club to play at the highest level possible and to raise the status of our club to back where it was and where it belongs. We have pride but the long and meandering road is long and meandering. We will get there. Trust Kittrick. He knows what he is doing. Never gets carried away when we win or capitulates to doom and gloom when we lose. A level headed manager is what we want/need. Keep the faith. we are climbing!!! Tom Purdy

Got to agree with this! We are top of the league, we are doing amazing but we can do better with Cads or Vallo bringing in just a little bit of creativity and forward thinking! How many chances do we create at the moment?
Hope vallo stays, hope Cadman stays. We know what either can do, Still waiting to see what Forrester can do. SK obviously rates him, SK is a master of doing everything but the obvious and fair play to him. Again, same as previous post, I’m over the moon with where we are as a club. Shoot me down for my opinion if you like but I’d love to see the two lads from last year given more of a chance to create just a little bit of attacking opportunity!

God help Steve K and everybody connected with the club if we drop to second in the league!

Geoff, cheer up fella having been quite closely connected to the club for a good few years I think most fans would have to say it aint that bad being a boro fan at the moment!

I agree great position to be at the moment ! But as I have said previously lets play positive football on the floor ,let’s play out of the back four let’s run the midfield let’s win the world cup ,not asking alot. I don’t mind the agro ,and yes I use my right name, and why not 😁

Interesting ‘debate’ here and this is what forum should be for. Fun not malice. All fans have views and none are a universal truth and none (ok perhaps some!) should be disregarded. This is a great time to be a Boro fan but it’s human nature to compare and analyse whether it be now v 50 years ago or now v last season. Focusing on the latter how do we compare to last season? Defence - surely much better. Midfield - Dean/Valentine/White v McGuire/Forrester/Dixon - ? Forwards - Brooksby v Wright ? Personally I think this year’s defence with last year’s midfield and attack would be 10 points clear. But we’ll never know andisnt that the beauty of being a footy fan? Conference North beckons.

Tend to agree. Probably makes more sense in a way for Mr Hooley etc to make criticisms now when we’re top and after a victory rather than when we’re losing as that just comes across as whinging because of a loss.

Thank you for using your real name. What a refreshing thing to do! Opinions are what makes watching footy great. However, from my point of view winning games is what makes the club tick.
